Layer Cake Lollies in Dover

Layer Cake Lollies is an exclusive (free) shortcut quilt pattern from the Fat Quarter Shop, and I hope to inspire you with my quilt made in Dover and Moda mochi linen. Dover’s color palette of soft whites, sea glass blue, soft green, and pebble greys is perfect for a spring quilt. The mochi linen adds natural texture.

Quilting with Mochi Linen

I washed the linen/cotton fabric to preshrink it before cutting. (I used spray starch on the layer cake and charm squares to preshrink them.) There was very little raveling and the texture is softer than 100% linen. It also resists wrinkling. I’ve napped with this quilt many times, and it never looks crumpled. Here are a few close-up photos to show how beautiful the linen looks quilted. Nancy at Valley Quilting did the edge-to-edge quilting with the Pleasure design.

Resizing Layer Cake Lollies: Go Big

I wanted a quilt large enough to take a nap so I added a row of three blocks to create a rectangular quilt rather than a square. As you can see, the quilt is long enough to cover my quilt-holding husband. It measures 56.5 inches by 72 inches.

If you also would like to modify the free pattern, purchase a charm pack that matches the layer cake. You’ll need the charm squares to cut the 12 additional Fabric A squares. You can cut the rest of the additional pieces (Fabric B, C, D) from the layer cake squares. Sew 48 units to form 12 quilt blocks. You’ll need more fabric for the background and borders. I purchased 3.75 yards so I could cut my borders without piecing them. Plus, I used the Mochi Linen to bind the quilt.

Quilt Backing

The quilt back is Tim Holtz’s Eclectic Elements Spelling Book Aqua. I had many yards of this in my stash, and Fat Quarter Shop has a few of Tim Holtz’s similar fabrics. I love the aged, collected look of these prints!

My Layer Cake Lollies is definitely one of my top three favorite quilts. I snuggle up with it every day! And if you’re interested in more Short Cut quilt patterns, take a look at the Fat Quarter Snowballs quilt I made in Bungalow pineapple prints by Kate Spain. It’s the perfect antidote for the sometimes blah days of early spring.

Iā€™m linking up with Sarah to celebrate Whoop Whoop Friday and Cheryl at Favorite Finish for March.

Joyfully,

Tracie
