Patchwork Forest Mini Quilt: Make a Quick Christmas Gift

Have you seen Amy Smart’s collection of free improv Patchwork Forest quilt patterns? I remembered how cute they all are when I read Amy’s blog post, My Favorite Christmas Quilts. On Black Friday I skipped the shopping and spent a relaxing day in my sewing room. After pulling out two Moda Lakeside Retreat charm packs from my vault of happiness, I started my improv cutting.

I watched Amy’s tutorial and read through the instructions posted here. Amy shows you how to stack squares intentionally and then cut and shuffle the pine trees. It couldn’t be any simpler. I turned on my Christmas playlist and chain-pieced 25 mini patchwork forest quilt blocks. Everyone’s blocks will be a different size, and my finished blocks measure 5.25-inches by 3.5-inches.

Before I went to bed, I had the quilt top assembled and quilted. Then I rummaged through my storage bins and found leftover indigo chambray binding from this table runner. This morning I bound the quilt on my sewing machine and celebrated my quick finish. The wallhanging measures 24-inches by 15.5-inches.

I quilted a one-inch grid with Isacord 40 Cornsilk thread.

The quilt back is a panel from the same Holly Taylor Lakeside Resort collection. In the bobbin, I used my favorite Aurifil Light Blue Grey 2610 thread. (Now I want to make a pastel version of this quilt!)

I’m so glad I found a way to use these small bits of fabric in my stash! I hope you crack open your own vault of happiness and make something beautiful to share. You can find more inspiration on Sandra’s blog post: Drop Everything and Make It #58. Now I’m ready to start decorating for Christmas and the first Sunday of Advent.
